Tips for charging an e-bike or e-scooter battery

Tips for charging an e-bike or e-scooter battery

The battery

The battery is the power source for your e-bike or e-scooter. The energy stored in the battery is transferred via the controller to the motor of the pedal assistance or directly to the e-motor in the case of an electric moped. This saves you a lot of blood, sweat and tears.

Most batteries today are lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are known for being lighter and having more capacity than lead batteries from the early days of electric scooters and bicycles. The voltage varies from about 36 Volts for bicycle batteries to 70 Volts for electric scooters.

The battery in your electric bike is one of the most expensive parts to replace, so that is a good reason to keep it in good condition and that it lasts as long as possible. In this blog I will give you a number of tips about improving the capacity of your battery and extend its lifespan.

Tip 1 - keep the battery charged:

Never park your bike with an (almost) empty battery. When a battery is not sufficiently charged for a longer period of time and is no longer used, the lifespan decreases quickly. Make sure that the battery is about 70% charged when you are not going to use it for a longer period of time. Then check every 1 to 2 months whether the battery needs to be recharged. Recharge the battery to 100% before use.

Tip 2 – Frost-free charging:

In winter, make sure that the battery is never charged in a place where it is freezing cold. Does the temperature drop below 0 degrees Celcius? Then take the battery indoors where it can be charged frost-free. An additional advantage is that a warm battery has more capacity than a cold battery. So place the battery back just before you hit the road.

Tip 3 – Have maintenance performed:

Have your e-bike maintained by a specialist once every six months. Among other things, he will also check the battery and provide the contacts of the battery and the charger with contact grease. This contact grease is necessary to prevent corrosion on the plug connections.

Tip 4 – Check the tire pressure:

Check the tire pressure. A frequently heard complaint is that the range decreases after a short period of 1 to 2 months. When checked, it often turns out that the problem is not the battery, but the tire pressure. A soft tire results into a lot of extra resistance. Therefore, check the tire pressure of your e-bike or e-scooter every month.

Tip 5 – Connecting and disconnecting the battery charger:

Maybe you recognize this; that big spark when you connect the battery charger? Very nice fireworks, but not really wanted. This is prevented by following these steps when connecting the battery charger:

Battery in place:

Connecting the battery charger
Step 1: Connect the charger to the battery.
Step 2: Now plug the charger into the wall socket.

Disconnecting the battery charger
Step 1: First, unplug the charger from the wall outlet.
Step 2: Now remove the plug from the battery.

Battery removed:

Connecting the battery charger
Step 1: Turn the battery and/or main fuse switch to 'off'
Step 2: Connect the charger to the battery.
Step 3: Now plug the charger into the wall socket.

Disconnecting the battery charger
Step 1: Set the battery and/or main fuse switch to 'off' if it isn't already.
Step 2: First, unplug the charger from the wall outlet.
Step 3: Now remove the plug from the battery.
Step 4: Put the battery back in your bike and lock the lock if present.
Step 5: Turn the battery and/or main fuse switch to "on".
